Diuretic

PREGNANCY RECOMMENDATION: No Human Data—Probably Compatible

BREASTFEEDING RECOMMENDATION: Limited Human Data—Probably Compatible

PREGNANCY SUMMARY

Metolazone is structurally related to the thiazide diuretics. (See also Chlorothiazide.) There is no evidence that thiazide diuretics are teratogenic. However, diuretics are not recommended for the treatment of gestational hypertension–preeclampsia because of the maternal hypovolemia characteristic of this disease.

FETAL RISK SUMMARY

Reproduction studies in mice, rats, and rabbits at doses up to 50 mg/kg/day revealed no evidence of fetal harm (1).

BREASTFEEDING SUMMARY

See CHLOROTHIAZIDE.
